Waking with the Ghats: The Real Varanasi Beyond the Postcards

Everyone warns you about Varanasi: the sensory overload, the narrow labyrinthine gallis, the burning ghats, the relentless honking. What they don’t tell you is how deeply peaceful the city becomes the moment you wake before dawn and step down to the riverbank.

5:00 AM at Chet Singh Ghat

Chet Singh Ghat is built like a fortified castle right on the edge of the river. Unlike Dashashwamedh Ghat, which buzzes with thousands of pilgrims and touts, mornings here are quiet. Rows of wooden boats gently knock against stone steps in the current. Temple bells ring faintly in the distance. The mist off the Ganga glows lavender, then amber, then gold.

"Varanasi doesn't try to impress you. It just exists with three thousand years of memory, and dares you to sit still and listen."

How to Navigate the Ghats Without Feeling Overwhelmed

The biggest mistake first-time travelers make is trying to conquer all 84 ghats in one afternoon under the blazing sun. Here is the local routine:

  1. Sunrise by Wooden Boat: Hire a hand-rowed wooden boat (avoid loud motorized ones). Row silently across to the sandy eastern bank as the sunrise paints the stone palaces gold.
  2. Morning Kachori-Jalebi: Walk into the old alleyways for piping hot kachoris served on dried leaf bowls with freshly made sweet jalebis.
  3. Midday Siesta / Rooftop Reading: Between 12:00 PM and 3:30 PM, retreat to the hostel rooftop or common room. Rest, read, work, or share chai with other travelers.
  4. Evening Sunset Stroll: When the heat drops, walk along the continuous stone steps from Chet Singh Ghat towards Assi Ghat for music sessions and the evening Ganga aarti.

Why Stay at Chet Singh Ghat?

Staying right at Chet Singh Ghat gives you the best of both worlds: you are directly on the river with immediate access to the ghat walkways, but situated in Shivala — a noticeably calmer, cleaner neighborhood than the chaotic main chowk.

In Varanasi, don't rush. Order a clay cup of lemon tea from a riverside vendor, watch the river flow, and let the rhythm of the oldest living city sink in.
