The Budget Backpacking Guide — Travel More, Spend Less, Live Better

There's a myth that travel requires money. Lots of it. That you need to save for years, plan every detail, and then spend cautiously the entire time. We're here to tell you that's nonsense. Some of the most incredible travelers we've hosted at Hidden Monkey spend less per day than most people spend on a Friday night out.

"I traveled through India for 3 months on less than what my friends spent on a weekend trip to Dubai. I saw more, felt more, and came back richer in every way except my bank account." — Marco, Italy

Accommodation — Your Biggest Lever

Where you sleep determines roughly 40% of your daily budget. Get this right, and everything else falls into place.

The Smart Options

  • Hostel dorms (₹400–800/night): The backpacker's home base. Clean, social, and usually in the best locations. At Hidden Monkey, that includes WiFi, lockers, and an in-house cafe with wholesome local meals.
  • Work exchanges (Free): Many hostels offer 2–4 hours of work per day in exchange for a free bed. Great if you're staying somewhere for 2+ weeks.
  • Couchsurfing (Free): Not dead, just evolved. Smaller communities, more genuine connections.
  • Off-season bookings: The same room that costs ₹1,500 in December might be ₹500 in July. Flexibility = savings.

Food — Eat Like a Local, Spend Like One Too

Tourist restaurants near famous landmarks charge 3–5x what locals pay for the same food (or worse). The golden rule: if the menu has photos, walk away.

Here's how to eat well on ₹300–500/day:

  • Breakfast: Hostel cafe breakfast or masala chai & toast — ₹40–60 total
  • Lunch: Street food or a local thali — ₹60–120
  • Snacks: Fresh fruit from a roadside vendor — ₹20–40
  • Dinner: Communal cafe dinner with hostel friends — ₹100–150

Pro tip: hostel rooftop cafe dinners are one of the best travel experiences you can have. Gather around the table with fellow travelers, share stories, and taste authentic local recipes made fresh with love.

Transportation — Slow Is Cheap

Speed costs money. The faster you want to get somewhere, the more you'll pay. Embrace slow travel:

  • Local buses over tourist shuttles — 5x cheaper, 10x more interesting
  • Shared autos over private taxis
  • Walking — free, healthy, and you'll discover things Google Maps doesn't know about
  • Night trains — save on a night's accommodation while covering distance

Experiences — The Best Things Are Free

Here's what costs nothing:

  • Watching sunrise from Tiger Hill in Darjeeling
  • Attending the Ganga Aarti in Varanasi
  • Hiking to a local viewpoint
  • Joining the hostel bonfire
  • Having a three-hour conversation with a stranger who becomes a friend

The most expensive activity on your trip should be experiences that teach you something — a cooking class, a guided trek with a local, a meditation session. Those are investments, not expenses.

The Money Mindset Shift

Budget travel isn't about deprivation. It's about intention. Every rupee you save on an overpriced hotel room is a rupee you can spend on something that actually matters — a longer trip, a meaningful experience, or simply the freedom to say "yes" when someone invites you on an unplanned adventure.

"The less I spent, the more I experienced. Budget travel forced me to be creative, talk to locals, and find hidden gems that wasn't in any guidebook." — Aisha, Netherlands

You don't need more money to travel. You need more courage. The rest is just logistics — and we promise, the logistics are easier than you think.

Start small. Start now. Start here.
